Private Pilot
A Private Pilot License (PPL) allows individuals to fly aircraft for personal and recreational use. It is the most common entry point into aviation and provides the foundational skills needed to operate a small aircraft safely. We find that typically students need about 70 hours before they are ready take their check-ride and get their certificate. Some students can do it in less, and others may take a bit more time. The expected cost should be around $14,000.

Instrument Rating
An Instrument Rating is an advanced certification that allows pilots to fly in a wider range of weather conditions using only their aircraft’s instruments. It enhances safety and skills by training pilots to navigate through clouds, fog, and low visibility situations without relying on visual cues. This rating is essential for those pursuing a career in aviation or looking to fly more confidently and reliably. The expected cost including rentals to build up to the necessary time needed to receive the certificate is around $16,500.

Commercial Pilot
A Commercial Pilot License (CPL) allows pilots to be compensated for their flying services. It builds on the skills learned in private and instrument training, focusing on precision, safety, and advanced flight maneuvers. With a CPL, pilots can pursue careers in fields such as charter flying, aerial surveying, banner towing, and eventually airline transport with further qualifications. Students should expect to spend about $21,000 building up to the commercial pilot certificate.
$21,000
Certified Flight Instructor
A Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) rating allows a pilot to teach others how to fly and provide flight instruction for certificates such as Private Pilot and Commercial Pilot. Earning a CFI rating involves advanced training in teaching techniques, flight maneuvers, and FAA regulations. It’s a common next step for commercial pilots looking to build flight hours and gain valuable experience while getting paid to fly. Expected cost should be around $6,800

Certified Flight Instructor Instrument
A Certified Flight Instructor – Instrument (CFII) rating allows a flight instructor to teach students how to fly solely by reference to instruments, which is required for earning an Instrument Rating. With a CFII, instructors can provide both ground and flight training in instrument procedures, approaches, and navigation. This rating enhances a pilot’s teaching credentials and is a key step for those pursuing a professional aviation career. Expected cost is around $6,000
$5,850
Complex Endorsement
A Complex Endorsement allows a pilot to operate aircraft with complex features, specifically those with retractable landing gear, flaps, and a controllable-pitch propeller. It’s not a separate license but an endorsement added to an existing pilot certificate after receiving specialized training. Gaining this endorsement expands a pilot’s skills and opens the door to flying more advanced aircraft. This endorsement is offered at $750, but it may be more if the student requires some additional training.
